damn lucky guy to walk away
If he turned the engine off he would’ve lost all breaking and steering, though I think I would’ve.
a similar thing happened to me a while back, but my car isn’t automatic and I just put the clutch in and managed to stop it, only when it happened to me the actual pedal wasn’t stuck, just the revs were, so with the clutch in it was red lining and the amount of smoke was ridiculous - it totally covered the road, ppl driving through it would’ve thought there was a big fire - when I took the key out (it wouldn’t stall either, just spun) the engine was still running, Denise shouted at me to take the key out, so I held it up and showed her so we bailed the car and I popped the bonnet to see if I could see anything (I couldn’t) and I was just about to give up and wait for it to explode when it just died ....
apparently it was oil in the turbo

Damn ... did your engine survive?
Looks like these accidents arent so rare at all. That thing with gas pedal happend to me too, when I had old Chrysler 180 years ago. But it wasnt automatic so I just put the clutch and stopped engine - it stopped in 2 seconds.
Anyway back to that guy, I think its way better to drive few hundred meters without steering and brake support than to drive at 200kmh like 100 miles? Especially if they cleared road for him. Its weird, I would say it would be better to wait on some straight part of road, turn off engine and try to slow down without major crash. Imho it should be possible, I once helped friend with his automatic Laguna, I was driving Laguna and he had truck and Laguna was on rope with disabled engine and steering/brake stupport - it was harder but definitively possible to drive. Maybe BMW has it different, who knows.
