DM-1on1-Revenge (UT)

This 1on1 release from Platinum can also be played with 3-4 players easily without too much spamming. My favorite way to play 1on1, besides online, is against two bots. Even though the player load is somewhat obvious, the author failed to mention it in his text file. When they start fragging each other, you can sometimes get them both with one shot. This 1on1 map is slightly more vertical than most.
The lighting on this map consists of various kinds of white lights with a red one near the top. There seems to be no errors and inconsistencies here and some darker areas add a little atmosphere. If you are not used to dark areas in certain sections of a map, then this map may not be for you. I have my brightness set at 3/4 across the bar, so this was no problem for me. The textures consist of concrete/stone block within a metal skeleton with wood and tile floors and ramps. The grays, steel grays and browns of the map look good together and give the map and finished feel to it. The surrounding mountains and sky box are a nice touch and I found no HOMs or misaligned textures. The simple textures also result in low poly counts and help the flow on low-end systems.
The sounds include the outside wind, a mechanical low hum and standard UT weapons and pickups. The standard UT track works here, but maybe some custom music and a couple more sounds could have spiced things up a bit.
The weapons, ammo and powerups are well-placed, but the armor and shield belt positions should be switched. The shield belt should be up high and harder to get to and the armor should be lower. There seems to be plenty of weapons and health here with no lack of ammo either.
The bots fight each other well at any skill level and I can see only ever-so-slight running in-place action from them. The bots aren't extremely difficult and aren't too easy either. I didn't see them go for the armor or x-loc once. Be careful because these bots will see you from far away.
As I took a quick look at this map, it seemed that it would flow very well with no snags at all. For the most part this is true, but I found the flow to be broken up just a little by the architectural layout of the map. This is hard to describe, but it has something to do with jumping from one level to the next in the middle of the map. It could also be because instead of the map being streched out more, it is more vertical. This is a minor flaw and has almost no bearing on gameplay and connectivity. This map would be a fine addition to any server and will remain in my UT directory. More maps by Platinum can be found here.
Bottom Line: Gameplay and simple crisp textures keep them coming back for more.
