DM-1on1-Armiger (UT)
MapAuthor: Homeslice
Date Reviewed: 6 August 2003
Reviewer: Clark Kent

Armiger armor bearer; arms + gerere to bear. Formerly, an armor bearer, as of a knight, an esquire who bore his shield and rendered other services. In later use, one next in degree to a knight, and entitled to armorial bearings. The term is now superseded by esquire A term from days of old for this DeathMatch map by our own InSite review master "Homeslice" who has brought us many fine works in the past. Homeslice and I are from the same neighborhood in New York City, an area called Bayside, which is in the borough of Queens. In fact Homeslice attends the same Community College that I graduated from 25 years ago and my mother still lives in Bayside and has for 35 years. That makes me older then most of you who are reading this review so if you ever see me on line remember to allow me to frag you out of respect for your elders! heh

Anyway, back to the review. This is a 2-4-player map that delivers a solid game in very tight quarters and I wouldn't try to play it with more than a 2 on 2 scenario because the map just wasn't designed to handle it. But for the designed player load it does deliver a nice tight game, which is fairly well laid out for you. It's a no brainer to learn the layout, which are two straight corridors connected via an elevator shaft. One corridor has an exit to the terrace and the other corridor has a teleport from the far end of the map to the terrace or garden or whatever you want to call it so you could loop right through the map. That really helped keep the game play flowing and also provided an escape route if you are getting pasted. Pop through the teleport and turn around to nail whoever follows you. Worked every time I tried it! There are two rooms near the teleport that have goodies in them so don't forget to check them out. I just wish that they were also used to respawn into instead of respawning in the middle of the action. This is a tiny map and I did find myself popping up in the middle of the action sometimes when playing 2 on 2 matches with the BOTs. If it's a 1 on 1 match that spawning issue is not as much of an issue, just an observation.

There are weapons galore here and invisibility too so check out the screen shots and they are clearly visible. The health keg is in the pool in the garden as is the flak canon. Rockets, mini gun, sniper and quad damage is in the center room above the lava and I liked that you did not fall through that grated flooring too easily. Don't get me wrong, I did fall in once but it's not obnoxiously annoying. You just have to be careful where you step while people are shooting at you, you can handle that right? Sure ya can! The issue I have with some of the placements that are in the little side rooms is that I wish I spawned there as I mentioned earlier. I was just so busy fragging in the 2 on 2 matches that I never got in there, or just didn't bother. But otherwise the weapons placement is quite decent on this map. So is the lighting if you didn’t notice it in my screen shots. These lights look like they are doing something other than hanging on the walls for decorations. The eyes of that statue in the teleport actually look like they are glowing and staring at you. Good job Homeslice on that aspect of detail because that is missed a lot in UT maps.

The BOTs played decent on "ADEPT" but were pretty easy to beat so feel free to crank them up higher when practicing if you use this map in a tournament. They used all the pickups and teleported many times, used the elevators, and weapons well. I didn't see them fall into the lava so they were pathed fairly well, but it is a small map and very straight. I didn't really notice the ambient sounds and the music is canned UT stuff, so I would have liked better tunes but that's me. Overall a good map that runs well and plays pretty good for a maximum load of 4 players. The 1 on 1 match I played wasn't bad either.

Bottom Line: Good map, solid and simple, good for small DeathMatch and tournament use as well. Check this one out.
