I can't remember where I read it, but I heard the following:
Google has a supercomputer cluster built in one of their data centers, it runs on a custom OS. The OS is the reason google can deploy thier projects so fast. This OS oversees everything, all searches and everything, it manages the windows/linux clusters that google uses also.
The article said one of google's main plans is to eventually expand that cluster to include the general public. They would deploy a freeware client OS, the client would talk to the server and people would have free OS that worked off of google servers. It would store data remotely on google's systems and users would get all updates and new technology from google for free, instead of buying it in packages. It would also give you the ability to login from any computer in the world and still feel like you are using your home one, since everything is stored with google you would get all of your preferences loaded too.
Sounds so crazy it's probably true
Of course if people are using a free OS, where does M$ make it's money?

Yeah you are right, but.
Why would google offer free wireless to a whole city, using google's vpn?
It has to be a test to see server load and the perfect place to test products. S.F is the perfect city too, because alot of people have hi-speed, alot of people use internet EVERYWHERE, and people in the BayArea are a little more tech friendly than alot of other cities. T
I think the free wifi in S.F is something huge, it gives google access to hundreds of thousands of guinea pigs, they can deploy tons of ideas in a limited test market and if it doesn't work no one is going to complain because they didn't charge anything, most of the country will never know, because it is only deployed to those using the vpn network, and if an idea does take off, then they can easily deploy it to other markets, just like gmail.
