Heh who knows what is Google gonna do next time. I dont think they have enough money to go for telco biz. But maybe they know that mainaining their own lines would be cheaper than renting them? I am sure Google must be paying millions each month to buy enough connectivity for their services.

Google to Sell 4.2 Billion Dollars of Shares

Some things I have heard are:

Google plans to offer free wifi across U.S & support it on ads.

Google plans on doing VOIP

Google is using it for internal lines.

Lol and last and most I've read is people have no idea what google is doing.

I think last two options are most likely. With Google Talk its just one step to VoIP.

I wonder how could be Wifi supported from ads?

Yeah that's what it seems like it is. The top searches at the time.

'CURRENT TV' STARTS WITH A 'GOOGLE CURRENT' SEGMENT

[Jul 31, 2005] This night at 21:00h PST 'Current TV' is live on the air in the States (366 on DirecTV, 103 on Time Warner in NYC, 125 on Comcast in SF). This is the media adventure of Al Gore --former vice president-- and supported by Google.

According to the firm, the first contents of 'Curren TV' will be a 'Google Current' segment. 'Google Current' reflects the immediate needs and interests of young people, offering easily digestible 30-second to three-minute segments. The subject matter is culled from what the world is searching for right now on Google, with the most popular searches on the site forming the basis of news stories.

'Google Current' is to be broadcasted twice an hour (see distribution), together with contents devoted to business, music, art or Internet, and some minutes of 'Current Studio', the attempt to build a community of people sharing their video files.

next in the 'Google Saga' Smile (we should start a 'google' thread Smile)

Google announced late Wednesday it had signed a memorandum of understanding with NASA that would allow it to collaborate on research projects with the space agency, as well as build a new one million square foot office complex at the NASA Ames Research Center.

The new complex would not be far from its current Mountain View, Calif. headquarters, dubbed the "Googleplex."

The agreement details plans to collaborate on large-scale data management, massively distributed computing, bio-info-nano convergence, and entrepreneurial space industry issues.

"Google and NASA share a common desire to bring a universe of information to people around the world," said Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

According to Google, the government land it gets out of the deal would largely be used for research and development functions. Schmidt says projects worked on at the location would not all be necessarily NASA-related.

In any case, the joining of NASA and Google has turned heads and sparked chatter. Some question what such a move contributes to Google's core business of search and advertising. Others see it as beneficial for both parties.

"Historically, there has been a strong relationship between technology companies and government agencies, although ties have been less strong during the last 10 years or so," Jupiter Research senior analyst Joe Wilcox (oh wow, is that the same Joe Wilcox?? aka Dr.Sin? the founder of CSHP??) explained to BetaNews. "It wasn't so long ago that cooperative R&D projects benefited government and private sector."

Google also could be looking well into the future. NASA has been exploring ways to extend the Internet out into space, and Google may be attempting to ensure it stakes a claim while the program is still in the early stages of development.

Also, both parties have been doing work in distributed computing. Google could benefit in the private sector from NASA's research, and possibly have a competitive advantage in the nascent industry currently dominated by IBM and Sun Microsystems.

"Our planned partnership presents an enormous range of potential benefits to the space program," NASA Ames Center Director G. Scott Hubbard said in a statment. "While our joint efforts will benefit both organizations, the real winner will be the American public."

I read in one article that in 10, probably 5 years, google will be the most powerful company on the planet.

Lol I am starting to believe it too. I need to go get a job there now.

Lol so next Google product is gonna be Google Space Shuttle - free voyages to space (with Google Ads on shuttle's windows tho. Laughing

But I wonder what benefit could cooperation with NASA bring them in next years though, commercial usage of space is still decades far...

Might as well throw this article in.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/03/technology/google_wifi/

Quote:
Google bids to take San Francisco WiFi
Sees the free wireless as an opportunity to test other products.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Google Inc. attempted to break into yet another sector of the Internet business with a recent bid to provide free wireless Internet access to San Francisco.

The Internet search engine, which launched a free e-mail service and map program around the time its shares soared following an initial public offering last year, was among several companies that submitted proposals to the city, Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said Monday in an e-mail.

Google (Research) proposes placing 20 or 30 connection boxes per square mile on city lampposts. The boxes, similar to regular WiFi boxes, would give users high-speed Internet access without the need for a physical connection or a monthly Internet bill.

The boxes would then all connect to a few fixed-line locations throughout the city, such as existing cable, phone or fiber-optic lines operated by local or long distance phone or cable companies.

Tyler said Google has plans to partner with a cable or phone company for the project, but he declined to name which one. He also declined to say how much the project would cost. But the Wall Street Journal Online, which first reported the story, said costs could run anywhere from $10 million to $20 million.

The Journal also said the service could end up in direct competition with cable or phone companies, which provide most of the current hookups, but Tyler said Google has no plans to expand the service outside the San Francisco area.

While the service would be free, Tyler said it offers the company a chance to test "new location-based applications and services that enable people to find relevant information exactly when and where they need it."

Some of those applications might include a service that uses Google maps to provide directions according to a user's location, or they could provide local advertising that targets customers in the immediate vicinity of the business, according to the Journal.

Reuters reported that San Francisco has received 24 proposals to provide WiFi in the city, including bids from Cingular and EarthLink (Research).

According to “The Google Legacy,'' history is about to repeat itself. Microsoft today is where IBM was years ago. And Google is in a position to do to Bill Gates what he did to IBM. The result could be a new industry kingpin.
