Bastard ISP has let me down!! Evil or Very Mad

I haven't had access to UT for about 4 days Crying or Very sad

I can feel my brain slowing down and my reflexes dulling!

Sorry..sorry... back on topic I promise.

My original idea was donate some cash to punt and ask nicely if I could use my own skin...but this would cause problems...i.e.

"Hey Punt! zen's got his own skin! What gives? I want my own skin....it's not fair...boo hoo" etc etc....

So I started this thread so everyone could have an equal chance. And everyone would know it was fair.

I doubt whether many people will want to pay to use their own skins. But I do!

Oh well RL is calling again.

ok...bare w/ me, i'm a little drunk...but...what if we scrap this skin idea real quick and tell me if it is possible in any way shape or form to make the server a little more stable....or give out better pings....is that possible? cause i could care less about d/l skins, etc....but when i get bad lag, which is pretty common w/ me in pm and i notice others as well.........this topic just makes me focus more on that instead....now, i'm not all network savvy and all that coding shit and whatever else you gotta do...but it's just a thought...mind you, it'a a thought from a drunk guy...but hey....i'm thinking about your clientel Wink

...and you guys for that matter as well.....

p.s. and if my idea isn't possible...then i think the skin idea is a pretty good idea...but i dunno what the hell amount of money your talking about....i live in U.S.....how much is that in my money??? Laughing

I think this skin idea was thought up when the server was a lot less laggy.
Punt seems a bit busy at the minute, but we tried to narrow it down a lot, even taking server 2 offline and taking everything off server 1 but it doesnt seem to have helped.

what if you only downloaded what you needed to download maps, pure, zp, oca skins. then after that once you get in game you are given a option screen that lists the other skins that you could see if you wanted to download them. Then you check the ones you want click ok then you either start downloading them then and then you can see them in the next map or you get kicked and reconnected and then it starts to download them and then you rejoin the server and see the new skins?

I know this all depends on someone (punt maybe) writing such a mod and if people don’t download the skins will they see green people like the cow skins?

The same mod could tell people who have paid how long they have left to use there skin and tell them that there time is up and to go to the forum to get another slot or re-new the one they have.

But if uses don’t want to download and see other peoples skins then what do the people who are paying think of that. I would not care as long as i could see it Wink

As for the lag at the oca servers I think that is punts main thing to fix and he knows this as well. I think he will always do his best to keep as lag free as possible.

So what do you think of that ?

Sadly I doubt such a mod would work, since the download process works before any user side modules can actually do any work.

OK well, a soundcard needed to be put into the server, and I figured: what the hell, its the simplest task ever. WHAT CAN GO WRONG, I will let my 2 coworkers do it while I'm away.

Well anyway after about 30 minutes the score was:

- Sound card inserted properly
- SCSI drive worth E700.- destroyed.

Anyhow this little idea of zen has therefore been put on a bit higher priority, heh maybe he doesn't wanna do it anymore anyway but as far as I can tell most people in here won't have too much of a problem downloading 1-2Mb more, once. And if they do, tough cookies Smile

I will kinda do this by the seat of my pants. The rules as specified before:

- We have 3 'slots' for either skins or voices. Also a hard limit of 2Mb total maximum download. If your skin is larger than 2/3 Mb (rounded up) you pay E1 per 100k over the size limit.

- Every every month people can bid, minimum bid is E5, if you want to be sure you get a slot or like punt so much you can bid more Smile

You can just bid once so make it good. Others will not know what you've bid. (you mail me personally). Top 3 win Smile

- If you have a slot and are bidding for the next month it sounds a fair 'extra renewal right' that you will get one more shot at bidding if you are outbid. You will get a mail saying you're too low and you can do a second try.

- A player pays for 28 days (unless its february; 26) and gets 30/31 days, but therefore has no right to bitch unless the server downtime is over 3 days (72 hours). I realise that it's hard to check actual downtimes, but we can try.

- If the server has a long downtime then we will just start the new month a few days later. If the server goes down forever people will get an equal amount of money back through paypal.

- Having a skin gives you NO extra privileges; if you cheat or fuck around you will still get banned and/or lose their skin like normal players would.

- The criteria to get a skin accepted are that basically they need to be 'fair' (not entirely black), non-intrusive (not annoying) and in the standard UT style, so 'normal' humans or aliens fighting, no flashing neon colors, no homer simpson or brain-in-a-jar models etc etc.. something that would kinda fit in the 'gritty' UT atmosphere. You get the idea. The same applies for voicepacks. Something that would fit.

- If you get something installed it's entirely up to you who you allow access to this skin/voice, though if you are thinking of doing this as an entire clan we will have to discuss special terms. $5 for a skin for an entire clan is pushing it. Make me an offer I can't refuse Smile

I really have no idea.. the story was that they did a 'routine check of the cables' and pulled out one of the power connector leads out of the HDD. (You need to use a SHITLOAD of force for that, but in all fairness that sometimes is necessary)

And afterwards the drive was dead. Yay.
