OK I've decided to enlist the help of willing users to get a list of what maps are large, medium and small. With this info we can eliminate huge maps out of the map lists when there's only a few people online, and if we want (some people seem to like this) eliminate small maps out of the map lists when there are many people online.

Also, if we switch (with voting) to say gladiator, it will randomly select a DM map, and selecting DM-Zeitkindpro1.3 might not be the best idea.

The server will ask for help if it doesn't know the size of the map already. If it asks, and you know the answer, please type

@mapsize small/medium/large

where:

small : 2-8 players
medium : 9 - 18 players
large : 19 - 28 players

The rationale is not JUST about physical size. It also depends on how much of the map can be seen, and how much chance you have to actually find anyone.

For example you could argue that CTf-Zeitkindpro1.3 is for medium and up, or even small and up (!) not just large, because you know where the flags are, you know what paths players will take when they have it, there are spots where you can snipe and kill them even when far away.

But for DM or (haha) Gladiator, DM-Zeitkindpro1.3 would be a total nightmare.

Well m8, I looked in my map folder and I have over 450 maps Shocked
I know that they are from other servers too, but jeez............thats gonna take some looking at!
BTW How many maps are on the OCA snp server? Have you a list?
The other thing is it seems a bit of a prob to say which is which size, because personal opinion differs so much with peeps, that it becomes very subjective. IMO.
eg: If I were to say.."@mapsize small" and someone else on the server said "@mapsize medium" and someone else said........well you see what I mean. What would the server do? Take the first command?
Im not trying to be negative dude.......it just seems to be a tall order in the format presented Confused
Or am I missing the point? (Quite possible)LOL Laughing
Like the idea though....hope it comes off Wink

The votes just get stored, nothing more.. Basically its a tall order to have everybody agree on sizes but the point is more that you don't want huge maps in 1vs1 maps etc. I don't think many people will differ on large vs small, and if some call something medium some call something small is OK.

And PM has hmm 200-ish DM maps

and 800ish total maps

Well m8 you know this is outrageous don't you, LOL.........map vote time needs extending by about ten minutes hehehe.

Joking aside m8, I'm still a little confused as to how @mapsize will be votable on for anything but the most obvious ones!
Oh well let me stew in my confused state a while (it's my age ya know...old man now) and maybe everyone else will make an easier time of it Wink

BTW. Wicked lot of work ya doin here m8 Cool

Hehe well the bottom line is that I would like to know if you consider map <X> a map that is 'large' 'medium' or 'small' compared to 'all others of the same type'

(so don't compare DM maps with JB maps for example)

That's all.

You're very right kokkie.. but you know what the bitch is? I don't have a way to go read all the topics in the forum automatically and make a list (since all those topics aren't formatted EXACTLY the same you need a human to parse it all)

Sooo someone will have to do it manually.. click on all topics and make a list with mapnames and mapsizes..

Anyone feel up to it? Smile

(btw you don't need to know a map to vote on it.. just play on the map for a while, and then just make a verdict when you think you have a feel for the size of it all)

OK I already made sure that Gladiator now will only pick the SMALL maps to play. Good.

Update:

Now if you select one of the metamaps (AS-1-Fragball.unr for example) it will pick a new map based on the # of players that are ingame. If there are less than 7 players a small map will be picked, less than 18 a medium one and for the rest a large one.

We are still missing data on a lot (if not all!) special maps, FB-*, CTFM-* and JB-* - please use the @mapsize command for these or you will be playing the same maps a lot Smile

Also - again - please try to judge the RELATIVE size of a map. In the Fragball case, compared to say Zeitkind 1.3 there are no 'large' maps, but for example a physically speaking small-ish map like FB-Cozmoz should be 'Medium'. Just start to judge when you've played a few maps Smile

Aaaalso judge on the 'small' size.. that is, if you are hesitating between medium and small, choose small, between medium and large, choose medium.

Hey, it's a challenge Wink

And yeah I was surprised to say that for a change that PacUT is pretty OK. Not something I'd wanna play for hours and hours but as a change of pace, yep, fun.
