On the topic of chat clients, have you tried trillian? I like it cos (a) it's free (lol) and (b) it connects to all the poplular chat software. Here's the sales blurb:

| i use trillian, the only problem i have had is AIM doesnt like trillian users and tried to block them when they connect via trillian. although it isnt long b4 the trillian makers create a patch to get around that.

Hmm, I seem to remember some patch fairly recently for trillian to fix an AIM problem ..... just checking .... latest is 0.74 patch D (feb 2003). Here is the blurb:

These patches include several changes to the AIM and ICQ engines within Trillian: Fixes the AIM connectivity crash that started on 02/11/2003.

Fixes the issues with AOL 8.0 and Trillian.
Update: If you downloaded 0.74 Patch C and are experiencing connection difficulties, please download the newest 0.74 Patch D below.

Yeah I am using Trillian with lastet patch and no probs with any netwrok, and I am using all of them  AOL, YIM, ICQ, MSN.
