Play Ball!!!
Frag*Ball plays like football basically, with a mix of soccer. The mod starts with a "scrum" mode, where that the ball will reappear on the field at the location of the first frag. This means if you frag an opposing player, the ball will appear where they died. After the first frag occursl, everyone tries to get the ball. Then, they have to work together and bring the ball to the enemy’s goal area for their first goal.
Using the Impact Hammer, you can throw the ball (it doesn’t go that far when thrown) into the goal or you can run into the goal and score. Once you score a point (1 or 2 for thrown and 5 for touchdown), the ball is dropped from the ceiling into the center of the arena so that both teams have a somewhat equal chance of claiming the ball.
The person who has the Frag*Ball is most susceptible to being killed, so teammates have to block and take damage for the ball carrier. The holder of the ball, called the Quarterback, can throw the ball to other teammates in case they are being surrounded by enemy players. Teamwork plays an important part in this mod, and if you think that you can score by yourself, you're in for a rude awakening.
Beta 1.0
While the scores may be lower for this version of Frag*Ball than for the previous version, it is undoubtedly a huge step for the mod. The new additions help round out the mod and make it even more fun, but they also introduce some minor and unwanted problems.
MapsRUs
The only major problem I had with the previous Frag*Ball was the lack of maps. There were only two maps that were included with the last beta of Frag*Ball. That is not the case with Beta 1.0. Eighteen maps are packaged with the mod, and each one is unique, nicely laid out, and quite imaginative. Most of them also feel less laggy. The map Atomic features a "Hall of Giants" setting, where the size is huge and has a couple of ramps. Defeat has one goal in a circular arena, which means maximum frag time. Gothic is a map that has multiple entrances to the goal, which makes defending a challenge.
Skins
There are differently skinned balls for different types of maps. For example, on Garden, which has a green forest setting, the ball is colored green. For Pitchfury, the ball is skinned to mimic a soccer ball since the setting is a soccer field. True, this may be a small addition, but it allows for some variety. However, Tygon not only has a different looking ball, but also different ball physics. Instead of flying away when the ball carrier is fragged, which is what usually happens, the ball just falls and doesn´t really go anywhere. This little alteration greatly changes the strategies used.
Bad bot, bad!!
Don´t get me wrong, the bot support in the mod is great. However, it isn´t as good as the last beta. This problem deals more with the maps since most of the maps feature goals that are above the ground. While the bots will usually shoot the ball into those high areas with the Impact Hammer, they will sometimes try to go for a touchdown, which is impossible. So then, they will just keep running up against the wall until they get fragged.
A Frag in One
The included 18 maps make this mod a must download. You will also not be able to ball camp as much since the included maps have multiple ball drop zones. Frag*Ball is a unique mod that seems to do everything right. With their future releases, they should have the bot support fixed and made even better.
