Oops, I posted my thanks in reply to Zed's post , but it wasnt in a public forum but in the OCA section. Eh. Hah. Too lazy.
Quote: |
LOL sounds like a lot of people are totally dependent on the server.
I think punt you should start taking donations and see if people will contribute to the "puntloos christmas foundation"
|
Hah yeah, puntloos Xmas foundation, sounds like a good plan. I just recently had to take out my first study loan cause one of the guys who was helping me finance the server machine just disappeared leaving me E 1000.- short. Ack.
Anyway for the record I didnt buy the server for UT, so don't feel bad for me. As I made very clear to OCA and everybody, UT is a secondary service. It's important to me personally but in theory it could go down permanently at any time, and if that happens I don't want people complaining they donated and now I ran away, so naw I will live without donations If you happen to be an american oil baron worth $42573489572348975 then yeah, ok, send me a buck or two
For now I appreciate the support and compliments on the server in various topics in the forum. Thanks everybody!
(and of course, PM should be back within a week when the Uni fixes the burned up infrastructure.)

The weaponarena mut works really well, its a bit like a translocator arena and you can have one type of weapon.
Or you could put zp2 on like nix said.

@ Punt. Sounds like ZED was thinking along the same lines as myself. I had been considering starting a post titled "Fund raiser for the smoking server appeal". I wanted to contribute in some way for the fact that the best UT server I know of, is brought to all of us for free!!!
But there you go and post a noble and selfless post declining offers. I understand your reason and feel it was well put, however if you are struggling and need a little extra cash, I for one would still make a donation, with no expectations of a continued service even if things change and the server must end! (It would only be a little bit though I'm not exactly rolling in it at the moment but who would miss a few E's if it would help you out)?

Well Server is back up again, as far as I can tell. I have no idea if the new link has the same bandwidth as the situation before the fire so if stuff is extra laggy we're probably still on some backup link.
Thanks wayzor, for the thought. As said, well naw so far Im doing OK I guess. I just can't afford the extra beers, movies etc. On the other hand, I've not installed an UT2003 server since that's one of the other things I can't afford (yeah standalone server is free but Im not gonna install a server if I can't play the game myself you understand). If you guys want me to try to set up a 2k3 server you have to cough up some dough. Plus, oh, SNP server already is taking up near 100% CPU time, OCA a bit less but also near 50% sometimes so I might have to limit the # of allowed players to fit in another server. (that, or buy newer CPU/more ram)..
So perhaps if you guys want we can consider setting up a small 'improving the server' fund to buy some extra hardware now and then? But as I said before, I can't make stiff promises on server uptime, UT is one of my personal priorities but for example UT alone constitutes 300Gigabyte of datatraffic a WEEK, so it is possible some network admin notices and cuts me off etc etc.

@ Punt
you are welcome.
Server fund sounds like a good compromise, try to get one of the other {OCA} members to set something up. You know a PO box is what we have over here in UK to send mail without having to know recipients real address.
PM me though with a similar address, because for mine and DRAGONS contribution we have chipped in together to get you a christmas present!
Can you guess what it is?? lol.
Sorry to the other {OCA} members, we can't afford present for you all
DRAGON is a student and I am on a two day working week at the moment
P.S. Nice to see you have the server up again allready

Hah! Great. The uni has only -partially- fixed the link.
The server's link is fine. (as far as I can tell from some small xfer tests) only MY link.. well, isnt.
500ms average ping time. Go figure.
(this is bcs one entire Campus of a Tech university (= 5000-ish mostly male students) have found out their internet is back and are now trying to download porn. Sadly the link WAS 1 Gigabit and is now 55Mbit.)
-sniffle-
I don't even have a naked woman skin on my servers.
Anyhow, Wayzor: cool Xmas coming early this year? - Actually here in Holland we have our own custom, 'Sinterklaas' which is kinda similar. Old guy, long beard, bringing presents to the nice children. Few differences, it's celebrated on 5 december and sometimes every weekend (not by putting up a sock, but setting a shoe near the fireplace, sometimes with gifts (carrot?) for the white horse Sinterklaas rides on). Sinterklaas lives in Madrid, Spain, has black helpers who do the actual work. Black from going down the chimneys, when Sinterklaas came around people hadn't invented racism yet. If you're a bad boy they stuff you in a sack and take you back to Spain. (go figure, Spain rules. Time to set fire to a few more network buildings). Also Sinterklaas makes silly rhymes.
Code: |
Sinterklaas was having a hard time
To find reason and rhyme
But lo, he said
PM is all dead
And everybody chipped in a dime.
|
Actually now I feel bad for the other people who haven't put in the heavy machinery but did put in a lot of time in OCA/PM and everything.

LMAO (Nice story)
Santa claus, Sinterklaas, it's all the same to me. Except the religious side perhaps, I dunno. (Religion doesn't do much for me personaly)
500ms eh. Guess you will be a bit easier to hit than normal then!
Hey that 55Mb link temp or permanent?

Well I sure hope 55M isnt permanent, Im sure it isn't actually. But Im sitting here with a whopping 10K/sec download from a server that's like half a mile away from where I am. Golly.
And hmm Xmas is religious of course, no idea if sinterklaas is.. 'sinterklaas' is 'Saint Nicholas' so it has some connotations, but I dont think it's that religious. Still, it's the thought that counts, isn't it?
