I was wondering, is it common service in EU, paid TV over phone line / ADSL line?

Telefonica bought major landline and mobile operators last year and just today they rebranded them both to O2. With rebranding, they started new service - paid TV via phone line.

You get classic D-Link router with 4 ethernet ports. 2 are reserved for internet, one is for digital TV (MPEG-4 Exclamation) and one is for VoIP (they dont sell it yet, but soon they will too).

But I dont understand where they get so much b/w? How much can MPEG-4 stream eat at full PAL and DVD quality? Like 4 Mbps at least? So if you have also 4 Mbps ADSL (you dont have to use both services though), they need to have like 8 Mbps per customer. Shocked And TV is not like ADSL which is usually idle, TV eats all available bandwidth all the time (well when you are watching).

So if 10.000 ppl watch TV, its like 40 Gigabits of bandwidth. Shocked WTH, how it is possible to run that?

Anyway I am thinking about getting it. They have HBO packages 50% cheaper Exclamation then satellite TV operator and 25% cheaper than any cable network in CZ. I get special price cos I have their ADSL too. But I am unsure about quality, bandwidth needed for quality MPEG-4 TV just seems to be too high for any network. Confused

I've never heard of it before lol.
Sounds crazy, and almost unmanageable with the bandwidth as you say.

Will be interesting to hear how it progresses.

Interesting that you mention that. That's what I'm working on right now. One of our customers is rolling out multicast tv in the city.

I'll explain more later, when I'm not at the headend working.

Right now I am in the server room typing from a gig connection Smile

Roba, to me that reads like:- This sounds impossible! Therefore I am going to try it! Razz Razz Laughing

I guess "integration" is the way things are going atm, what with mobile phone companies getting in on the broadband provision scene, and established ISP's providing home phones along with broadband as well as tv over broadband as you mentioned these days. Of course Sky satellite tv is moving into providing broadband, along with the fact they do home phones as well.

I kinda like having distinct established professional companies handle each separately myself, but then again the cost savings associated with the integrated packages does start to tempt me!

But personally I don't fancy being the guinea-pig for such things in the early days! Wink

I wouldn't mind doing the odd bit of beta testing for them, but I ain't prepared to pay for that!

Yeah thats what I like too - these companies gives you all sort of bonuses if you use all their services. Also there is less paper work, instead of 3 "pay me" type envelopes Razz you get only one (fat).

But it seems to be logic evolution. Everything is based on data today. Digital TV, Digital phone, the Internet, even mobile phones are digital. So all these TV, phone, internet and mobile companies are basically providing same service, just the content is different. Now if all of them start to do everything, that will be nice price wars Twisted Evil .... or nice cartel Evil or Very Mad.

Someone sent me demo manager so I was playing around recording with it. I then used fraps to convert it to an avi. Then I used some video editing software to cut it down to just the bit I wanted. Then I used another program which name I forgot to crop it down to just what I wanted- will need to search that, was a great program and free. Then I used an Avi>Gif converting program. Along the way it has lost at least half of its quality. It might look better in flash, but I don't know if anywhere allows flash avatars. It was the avi>gif which caused the most quality loss.

That was done on the wDx server where they installed my skin too Cool
