Lets begin with this great new EVE official video, really worth of download I think. I will post some screenshots later too.
http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/video/2/EVENeverFadesLarge.wmv
Btw note the star map in the video, thats real map from the game. It consists of thousands of planets connected by thousands of jump ways, map is completly in 3D and when I saw it for the first time, I only thought OMFG! EVE world is huge and there is no way one player could ever visit all parts of it. Like in real world.
EVE Online is interesting becouse it has only ONE game server. ONE world, where all of the 70.000 subcribers play, with usually 10-15.000 players online at the same time. EVE Online has minimum NPC infulence on the gaming world, most of products are manufactured by player corporations and market prices are real reflection of current players offer and demand.
Player corporations are like clans in UT. But some of them are HUGE. Biggest corporations have hundreds of members and they are often allied in Alliances each with thousands of players. These aliances explore systems which doesnt belong to any NPC faction (races) and create their own empires in this worlds. With their own factories, mining stations, research and security forces. Every player has its job in corporation.
Gaming characters always belongs to one of the basic races, for example my character is Gallente, Intaki blood line. Character building is very important thing in EVE, becouse there are hundreds of skills you can (need to) learn to be able to do/use various things. Its completyl impossible to train one character to be good in all things, you have to choose your one or two professions, and train your character in this way. It takes months of real time to have decntly trained character, cos some skills take WEEKS of real time to reach highest level. I am still building my learning skills and also some Spacefligh and Fighting. Learning skills are most important, cos they improve your character and shorten further learning times.
EVE is as much real as game world can be. As I said, world is huge so travel time is long too. To travel from one end of region to another you will need 15-20 mins of real time. And there are tens if not hundreds of regions in EVE world. If your ship is destroyed, you will get some insurance if you paid it, but that will cover only your skip costs, not its modules and weapons which are often worth of 10 new ships. When they even kill your escape pod, you are dead and resurrected from clon copy. If you paid for it of course. But even this will cost you money, cos your implats are not part of clone copy, only your skills. One implant can be worth of millions and character can have up to 8 of them. In other words, death in EVE is really bad. It can take you MONTHS of real time back in lost shop equipment and implatns. This makes you very careful about dangers and when you play, you dont play like other games - save, risk, die, try again. You have to think twice before you go into any risk.
As in real world, players in EVE are good and bad. Some players give their gaming time to protect others and join security corporations who patrol large areas and protect other players from pirates - thos bad players who choosed the dark side. There are also smugglers who make their profits in forbidden goods. Other players works in manufacturing and trade, they produce goods and deliver them to buyers. Researchers improves technologis to cut production costs and maximize profits. Miners are doing organized raids on asteroids and mine materials for manufacturing. For example, one large minining operation can cosist of tens of players. Some of them have special mining ships and mine asterioids, other group fly large haulers and deliver mined ore to their corporation refinery and third grou of players are fighets who protect their mining and hauling mates from enemy corporations attacks and ore thieves.
There are also Traders and Freelancers, who just fly thru the universe and sometimes trade, sometimes take missions (from both NPC and player corporations), sometime explores. Haulers are owners of giant ships who take tranport missions from other players and haul their goods thru the universe, often with armed escorts in dangerous areas.
Like in real world, there are also wars. Usually player Aliances fight over control of systems or even constalltions. System with rare ore is extremly valuable and often battles of epic dimensions are happenning. Biggest battles can have tens of players on both sides piloting huge battleships.
I have to say, EVE Online is most complex game I have ever seen. You can see all those years of development on it. However this biggest advantage is also its biggest disadvantage. The game is extramely hard for new players and thanks to its complexity, there isnt even some complete manual. It takes months of real time to train your character to some decent level. But I guess thats the price for realism of game world.
OK, enough of blahblahing, enjoy the video, I will post some pics next time.

Looks very cool. I am like Spawn though, plus I would feel like I am wasting money if I didn't play it enough lol.

Yeah thats only thing which sucks on EVE the monthly payment, which is also too high imho. I would prefer some kind of per hour payment, cos I barely have time to play during week, so I am basically paying only for weekend playing... Hm but hey, I bet they have dreams about ferraris too, so I have to help them a bit.
X games are great too, I cant wait for X3.
Here are some screens from my EVE:
I am flying with my old ship around station debris on lowsec space.
Again my old ship and some asteroids, nearby is very valuable asteroid which is soon gonna be mined by me.
My current ship (Cruiser class).
And again.
Me jumping thru jumpgate.
Approaching station to start docking sequence.
Docked in station.
Space billboards warning young pilots from dugs.
If this guy and his battleship got mad, I would be dead in few seconds.
EVE Map, all dots represent systems which can be visited. Red ones are most dangerous, green are safe.
Lines represent jumpways, I am just planning navigation for my next journey.
It takes some time before you can orient in this chaos lol.
Looking for some gun on reginal market.
List of current sell and buy orders for selected item.
Is the price good or bad? Graphs will help you to see that.
Sometimes I feel like I need another monitor.
Ship configuration, I have only noobish components atm, and all turret slots are occupied by mining lasers.

This looks really nice!
I played some ages ago Black Nova Traders.
This is similar, i think, but it is/was only 2D.
I would like EVE too, that's sure!
But monthly payment? No way!

No, X3 wont be online or multiplayer, its their next project - X Online.
X3 is renamed X2 The Return expansion for X2 The Threat, but since they made a lot of major changes (and need more money), they decided to sell X2TR as completly new game, X3 Reunion.

Have you also played Elite II Frontier or Elite III First Encounters? Those games made me spacesim freak I was totally addicted to them. Especially EIIF, becouse EIIIFE was released unfinished and due to bug was almost unplayable . I wish David Braben finally released next Elite....

Lol glad to see so many of us know the Elite legend . Spawn have you also played Freelancer? That was relatively good game, but too easy to play. I had best ship in less than two weeks and if you had that, there was nothing to do for you...
