I have an MSI KT3 Ultra ARU MB, Athlon 1800+, 512 MB PC2700 DDR333, Win XP Pro, Gainward GF3 Ti 200, 4.38 4 in 1's and use Nvidia's 23.11 drivers. Do NOT use the new 23.8x drivers. When I installed them I had nothing but trouble. With the 23.11's I have not had a single crash since I built my system.
Hope my preaching helps,

Well, I do have audigy plus via and do experience crashes with unreal on an otherwise rock-stable system. I've played Soldier of Fortune II for hours without a single crash but Unreal is simply a different story. I think perhaps the combination 'Unreal+Via chipsets' is the main problem.

Aww don't feel bad, you did your best
Seriously in my experience there are so many reasons why a certain system doesn't run a certain program (well). Case in point every computer I've known has mysteriously refused to run at least one game. My dad's old computer simply refused to run unreal, period. (well it worked, windowed, at 3fps), my own computer just goes on Baldur's Gate II..
The best thing anyone can do I guess is indeed toy around with your drivers, use newer or older ones and/or do a clean reinstall of your OS, perhaps installing a newer OS or an older OS..
I guess it comes down to how much it bothers you. As said my system crashes on UT occasionally but I just live with it.
