DM-1on1-Oxide, by John-Layton Jenkins, is a small, tournament kind of a map set in, simply put, a very small industrial warehouse. I mean, what more can I say?

For starters, while this is a 1on1 map, the player load has been set to 2-3 here. Of course, this map has the adequate space for a 1-on-1, but it's apparently also got the space for a 1-on-1....on-1. Or something. I dunno. Anyway, in regards to architecture, there's not a lot of complexity to speak of. Sure, there are some nice curves on the ceilings and along some walls, but really, that is it. Everything else is pretty simple, or needs a staircase. At least it's not messy, but it can get a bit cramped in a couple of spots. Texturing was the typical industrial standard, with concrete on the walls, and steel on the stairs and floors. There are also some floor sectors made of concrete-tile, and you'll find some fenced hatches that overlook the lower level below you. These are rather basic choices for this type of a map, but they are good choices, and they're aligned pretty nicely. Bots knew the map pretty well. They went for many of the items (though I didn't see them try to grab the Shield Belt that often), utilized the lifts, and were tough customers to deal with (that is, sealing the bargains with rockets to your head), to be straightforward here. This should be a good map, especially for the tourney freaks, to try out online as well. Since the map is so small and there's no jumble of texturing or items in one visible spot, the map flows pretty darn well here. Most every machine can take it, but what's even more convenient is the tiny download size - for the slow-end machine users, this is, for sure, your lucky day!

I mentioned the items just a second ago, so I'll talk on them next. You can find things such as ammo along a few walls, some health vials on an elevated piece of the floor, and in general, find any weapon on ground level. You'll need to do some good jumping to reach that shield belt on the top of a box, though. Items were done very nicely for such a small map. In terms of the lighting, I didn't notice anything too bright or dark here either. It's all just right. The lens flares look good here and give off just enough lighting radii for their areas. I liked how they were lined up properly (horizontally and vertically alike), and I also liked how the red lights found here give some good light. Again, the lighting is near perfect in this map. There isn't much in the way of sounds to listen to, though there are those of the fan-blades whirlin', and those placed into the lifts found here. Razor-ub, the default UT track which as we all know can rock out to the point that your eardrums may need cymbals to keep them functioning (good one, eh?), was the featured music track for this map. Though it's a default track, yes, this is a very good fit for the factory-type atmosphere. And in regards to the map strategy, all ya gotta do (like always, basically) is get any good weapon and power-up (including that blasted Shield Belt) you can get your hands (or tentacles if you use a strange player skin) on. Meh, nothing to it, really. Just grab 'em!

Bottom Line: If you're still in dire need of a UT map for your collection (especially a UT tourney map), then download this map, seeing as it's worth a few good matches.
