What does it do?
HOSTS file can be used to block ads, banners, cookies, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the server that supplies the info. It can also let your computer know the exact ip of an address, which increases surfing time.
an example from mine:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 images.real.com
127.0.0.1 real.com
127.0.0.1 ct5.hypercount.com
127.0.0.1 acme.bfast.com
if you want to find this file for nt, 2k, and xp go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
and I think just C:\Windows in 9x
Make a backup of your old one and put this one in there, it's read-only so it can't be changed by a site, also if you find you can't get to a site you use to be able to, just do a Find in the file (edit with a text editor) and delete that entry.
